About Carissa's Caution

Carissa's Caution is working to spread the word about swimming safely in natural bodies of water. Our goal is to prevent childhood drownings. We hope to do so by educating children and parents on when and where it is safe to swim. We also help other families who have been affected by this tragedy to raise drowning awareness of all types- pools, entrapments, boatings, etc. We are inspired by a beautiful, high-spirited girl named Carissa Babcock, who died at 9 years old while swimming in a river. Her death and all drownings are 100% preventable. Help us keep any more children from drowning!

In our family, Carissa was the Rock Star. She was full of life and love. She was an amazing big sister and a wonderful daughter. She loved singing and dancing, shopping, and being with friends and family.

Carissa had taken three years of swim lessons and went swimming quite often. We considered her a good swimmer; however, we did not discuss with her the differences between swimming in a pool and swimming in a river. On August 28th, 2015, she went swimming with some family members and friends in the Mattawamkeag River in Maine. According to the group, they were suddenly overcome by powerful water and Carissa was pulled under with the current, never to be seen again. Her body was found the next morning. Many decisions that day could have prevented Carissa's drowning- an observance of the fast moving water, a life jacket, a loving parent within arm's reach. Carissa's Caution was formed to honor and love Carissa by teaching families how to make the right decisions to enjoy safe swimming in natural bodies of water.
